Pacers Sports & Entertainment and Kroger Partner for Diaper Drive Honoring Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.'s Commitment to Service

Jan 08 // 2024

Kroger is proud to partner with Indiana Pacers Sports & Entertainment in honoring Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.’s legacy of community service. The organizations are joining in a diaper drive to support the Indiana Diaper Bank, today to Friday, January 12.  The bank says 1 in 2 Indiana families struggle to provide enough diapers to keep their babies clean, dry, and healthy. So, this drive is crucial to the families the diaper bank serves.

Colleen Juergensen, president of Kroger Central Division, welcomes the partnership as “another way for the grocer and its friends to help central Indiana parents with one of the most basic needs for a baby’s good health.” Juergensen said, “As a grandma, it is easy to understand how the expense of diapers can challenge families who live at or near the poverty line. Kroger is honored to work with the Pacers and our generous customers to assist families at such a crucial time in every baby’s development.”

“Parents should not have to choose between food or diapers,” said Tracy Ellis-Ward, Senior Vice President for Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion at Pacers Sports & Entertainment. “We are thrilled to partner with Kroger to address this need for families in our community and support the Indiana Diaper Bank.”

The Indiana Diaper Bank says it hopes the drive not only expands awareness of the local need for diapers, but also boosts the resources of community agencies that help families when this need arises.

According to the Indiana Diaper Bank:

  • The poorest fifth of Americans who buy diapers spend nearly 14% of their post-tax income on them.
  • No federal government programs, including WIC and SNAP, provide funding for diapers and wipes for families.
  • The Indiana Diaper Bank distributed more than 1.7 million diapers throughout Indiana in 2023. It hopes to help more Hoosier families in 2024.

“Diapers tangibly impact families in accessing long-term poverty intervention to increase their quality of life,” said Diaper Bank CEO Ashley Burns. “We can eliminate diaper need and change the trajectory for these families. It is important to help them provide the basic needs for their children. Together with YOU, the Pacers, and Kroger we can change more diapers, and change lives.”

The participating Kroger stores have bins where customers can donate diapers. The bins also feature a QR code which customers can use to make monetary donations directly to the Indiana Diaper Bank.

The Indiana Pacers will offer additional information about the drive on the team’s website, social media and during the game, Wednesday, January 10, at Gainbridge Fieldhouse.
